Summer Events:

  • Motown Mission Experience: We had a great time July 11-17. This event was organized by the Detroit Conference Young Leaders Initiative. Some pictures from our week can be found online on flickr. Working with the Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation, we did light home repairs, painted a swing set at a community center, tilled a small garden area for a community garden, worked pulling weeds and clearing a large garden area at the D-Town garden in Rouge Park, and worked with groups from other churches in cleaning up front yards of 28 abandoned homes to make a struggling neighborhood a better place to live. We also made new friends, got to learn and worship with groups from other churches, attended a Wednesday evening service at a very large, loving, and different church, ate nachos at Xochimilco, and explored the DIA.

Fall plans:

We will be moving our meetings to Sunday mornings at 9:30 in the Youth Room, starting September 12. These meetings will include Bible Study and a light breakfast. As we did last year, we will take turns bringing food to share. We will be starting a series of video-based Bible studies called Velocity, with topics such as freedom, culture clash, fitting in, and hope.

All middle school and high school students are invited to join us.

Besides our Sunday morning Bible studies, we will do fun activities once or twice a month, starting with a half day "random" road trip and hiking the other half of the Waterloo-Pinckney Hiking Trail. Check back here or see Scott for details as plans are firmed up.

Servant Evangelism

After being inspired by Steve Sjogren at today's service, I checked out the Servant Evangelism web site. I highly recommend it. Go there yourself for a video interview, articles, ideas, and a free e-zine.

Winter Jam 2010

Three of us went to Winter Jam 2010 at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center. We saw several good bands, and Tony Nolan's talk was truly inspirational. Emma's favorite band was Newsboys. I preferred Third Day and also liked Mikeschair. Brandon thought they were all ok. These bands all have myspace sites where you can listen to a few songs:

A Big Thank-you

Thanks to John and Gayle Mihalik for making our recent fund-raisers such a big success!
